About Reggio Calabria

This thriving coastal city lies in the south of Italy, at the tip of the Italian boot. Its main beach strip, the Lungomare Falcomatà, is backed by a delightful promenade dotted with a series of artworks as well as several beach bars and cafes. It’s also one of the main areas to enjoy an evening stroll. At the centre is a public amphitheatre and the Monument of Athena, an icon of the city which is said to defend Reggio Calabria in times of need.

Early birds out for a morning stroll might be lucky enough to experience the 'Fata Morgana effect', a unique optical phenomenon that only happens under specific conditions. Ships and buildings appear to float in thin air and distant objects (including the port of Messina across the Strait of Sicily) seem incredibly close. But if you want to pop over to Sicily for real, you can simply catch one of the regular passenger ferries.

Learn about the region’s history at the Museo Nazionale where there’s a huge collection of Greek and Roman artefacts and relics. Grab a gelato from one of the many excellent local ice cream shops and head up to the battlements of Castello Aragonese for a walk along its defensive towers. Originally created in the early Middle Ages, the castle remains in fantastic condition to this day. Corso Garibaldi is the main shopping area where you can grab a souvenir or enjoy a spot of retail therapy.
